Things to know & bring

Thank you for booking a stay at La Colina.

We are looking forward to hosting you and here is some information to help you prepare for your visit.

Click Here for Directions, Transport and Airport Information

Check-in time: 3pm-6pm (This is to allow time for us to clean between guests, and to ensure you arrive before dark)

Check-out time: Check out time is 12:00 Noon.

Things to Bring:

  • A flashlight or headtorch – It gets dark fairly early in Nayarit, and you will want a light to be able to navigate the jungle paths and in case our solar power goes out.
  • Closed Shoes for hiking and keeping insects and spiky vines off your toes.
  • Sandals for the rest of the time
  • Swimwear for the pool and the beach
  • Sunglasses
  • Insect Repellent
  • Book/art supplies
  • Warm clothing for the evenings
  • Binoculars
  • Pesos The bank machines in San Pancho are unreliable, it is best if you arrive with some cash. We recommend taking pesos out at the bank machines at the airport or in Puerto Vallarta or Bucerias.

Location: La Colina is 35,000 square metres of protected tropical jungle in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. We’re located 3 km from the pacific ocean, just outside a small (2,000 resident) village called San Pancho (It’s official name is San Francisco, so that’s what to look for on the map.)

It takes about 20-25 minutes to walk to town, and about another 15-20 minutes to walk down to the beach. If you don’t have a vehicle, we will pick you up from San Pancho between 3pm-6pm on the day of your arrival. Please contact us beforehand to make arrangements.

Driving to La Colina: If you have a car, we have plenty of space for parking. La Colina is a 2km drive from the entrance to San Pancho, along a dirt road which crosses several arroyos (streams). In the summer (rainy season) we strongly recommend a 4×4 to be able to cross the arroyos. The rest of the year most vehicles will be fine to make it to our front gates.

La Colina is a wild place, with wild animals, rough roads and a rustic feel. It is not a place for people who need lots of luxury – it might be one day, but right now it’s an off-grid work in progress with dry toilets and a closeness with nature.

Dry Toilets: We don’t use water to flush our toilets here at La Colina, we use sawdust! We are protecting our local waterways, and by composting our bodily waste, we return the nutrients to the earth rather than creating waste water.

Use the toilets as normal, pee, poo and toilet paper all go in the receptacle. After each use cover your deposits with sawdust to eliminate smell and close the lid! If the receptacle is full, open the lid of the box, place the provided lid on the bucket, and replace with one of the provided empty buckets.

For more information from the creators of the Humanure Handbook please click here.

Showers: All our showers have hot water! The water comes from a well, please use it wisely.

Drinking Water: We provide filtered drinking water in the large blue bottles in every kitchen.

Cell Phones: There is mobile coverage at La Colina, but only from the TELCEL network. The other Mexican networks do not have signal here. Telcel SIM cards can be purchased for $70-120 pesos, depending on where you buy them from.

Wifi: We have internet service via the cell phone network, please use it sparingly as we have a limited number of GB. The password is junglelife

Artists: We love art and want to encourage creativity, but please agree with us any art that you want to leave at La Colina.

Private Chef: The food in San Pancho and Sayulita is delicious and varied, and you won’t have time to try all the restaurants, taco stands and bars, even if you try your best! For special occasions, or just a quiet night in, we offer the services of Private Chef Fernando Jimenez Lopez. You can pre-order meals (48 hours notice required) to have waiting ready to heat up (his lasagne, pad thai, falafel and hummus, chicken fajitas, or coconut shrimp are just a few of our favourites) or, for a full service dinner, he and his team can bring a special dinner to you, serve it at La Colina, and clean up afterwards. If this interests you, please contact us for more details and to make your order.

Anything Else? We want your stay at La Colina to be really special. If we can help you with anything else at all, please let us know. We can arrange private yoga classes, massage, shiatsu, feldenkrais, reiki, surf lessons, and more! We are at your service, please contact us by e-mail, WhatsApp or phone.
